How it works

A skimmer can collect floating debris. Its duty and position depend on the pond layout.

What to establish
  • Use the operating pond volume and actual loading.
  • Review collection, filtration, oxygen and return distribution.
  • Record water chemistry and changes in fish behaviour.

Key takeaways

  • Green water is free-floating algae. String algae and blanket weed are different problems with different fixes.
  • UV-C clears green water in days, but does not remove the nutrients that feed it.
  • The lasting fix is to get waste out early, keep the biofilter healthy and feed fish sensibly.
  • Expect two weeks, not two days. Large changes in water chemistry upset fish.
THE SHORT ANSWER

Why is my pond water green?

Algae need light, warmth and nutrients, mostly nitrate and phosphate. A pond with strong sun, warm water, lots of fish waste and uneaten food provides all three. Spring is the classic time, when light and temperature rise before the biofilter has fully woken up.

PLANNING WORKBENCH

Work with your own numbers.

Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.

Flow & turnover planner

Relate a measured water volume to a selected turnover time. Confirm the time from the application and hydraulic design.

Assumptions and limits

A planning allowance is your assumption. This calculation does not choose a filter, prove treatment capacity or account for pump head.

—Base flow · m³/h
—Planning flow · m³/h
—Planning flow · L/h
Enter your values, or load the labelled arithmetic example. No design values are pre-filled.
FormulaFlow = volume ÷ turnover time. Planning flow = flow × (1 + allowance ÷ 100).

What causes green pond water?

Too many nutrientsFish waste, uneaten food, decaying leaves and tap water phosphate.
Too much sunFull sun on shallow water drives growth.
A weak biofilterSlow-growing bacteria cannot keep ammonia and nitrate under control.
Too little flowDead zones let waste collect and rot.
OverfeedingExtra food becomes dissolved nutrients.

Does uv-c clear green water?

Yes. Water passing through the UV chamber kills or damages algae cells, which then clump and are filtered out. It works in days to a couple of weeks. But UV treats the algae, not the nutrients behind them, so you also need good mechanical and biological filtration.

Why you need both

UV-C without filtration leaves dead algae in the water as new fertiliser. A drum filter or settlement chamber removes the clumps before they break down. See UV clarifier vs sterilizer.

What decides whether a UV keeps up

  • Contact time: slower flow gives a better dose.
  • Lamp age: output falls over the year.
  • Sleeve cleanliness: scale and film block UV.
  • Water clarity: cloudy water blocks light.

For sizing, see UV lamp sizing and dose.

A step-by-step plan

  1. Test the waterAmmonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH. Look for what the algae are feeding on.
  2. Feed lessCut feeding for a week or two and remove uneaten food.
  3. Check or add UV-CConfirm the lamp is working and sized for your flow.
  4. Get the waste out quicklySkimmer, bottom drain and a mechanical filter reduce nutrient release.
  5. Keep enough flowMost koi ponds aim for a turnover in one to two hours.
  6. Keep the biofilter runningDo not wash it in tap water or disrupt it.
  7. Change part of the waterSmall, regular changes with conditioned water.
  8. Add shade and oxygenFloating plants and aeration reduce light and support the biofilter.
  9. Be patientClear water returns in stages. Keep up the routine afterwards.

Where our products fit

A drum filter takes waste out of the water before it dissolves. A biofilter converts ammonia. A UV-C unit clears the algae that are already there. Together they cover cause and symptom.

QUESTIONS

Green Pond Water FAQ

How long does green water take to clear?

With a properly sized UV-C, usually a few days to two weeks.

Is green water harmful to fish?

Usually not directly, but algae use oxygen at night and can cause oxygen dips.

Will water changes fix it?

Only briefly. The nutrients come back unless you fix their source.

Should I use algaecides?

We do not recommend them. They can harm the biofilter and fish.
