Trickle Filters in Aquaculture: Efficient Biofiltration Solutions
Trickle filters are fixed-bed, aerated biotower systems designed to convert toxic nitrogen waste in aquaculture water into non-toxic byproducts. They utilize polyethylene (PE) bioballs, offering a large surface area for microorganisms to thrive, facilitating efficient nitrification and gas exchange to restore CO₂ and O₂ levels. These filters are effective in both freshwater and marine Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), supporting Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN) removal rates from 10 to 1800 grams per day and accommodating biomass from 10 to 2600 kg at a 4% feeding ratio per biotower
Advantages of Trickle Filters in Aquaculture Systems
Trickle filters offer several benefits, including improved wet and dry filtration, advanced filter design, high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) treatment capacity, and enhanced gas exchange interfaces to restore CO₂ and O₂ levels in the water. They also feature minimized filter clogging, no need for periodic backwashing, a resistive and durable structure, and simplicity in design, making them easy to operate and maintain
OPERATION & ENGINEERING OF TRCIKLE FILTERS
The Trickle bio-tower Filters, receive pre-filtered biologically charged water which trickles through biomedia (PE bioballs). The media surface offers the layer onto which a biomass of microorganisms is thriving by removing the ammonia through chemical reactions. They are designed to maintain the conditions for maximum microorganism population growth and dead zone elimination. The Trickle filtration is the traditional solution for high TAN Load Removal, by maximizing the wastewater trickling surface, and by optimizing gas exchange.
All the supported components of the Ozone Generators are repairable and replaceable.
