Pureflow Bio · Pump protection
Basket Strainers for Aquaculture
Protect your pumps with basket strainers that catch coarse debris before it reaches downstream equipment. Pureflow Bio manufactures PP basket strainers in India for aquaculture, RAS and aquarium water systems.
Compare six BSF models with listed maximum flows from 50 to 650 m³/h. Then confirm the basket opening, connections and operating duty for your installation.

A first line of protection
What Is a Basket Strainer?
A basket strainer is a coarse pre-filter fitted in a water line. Water passes through a perforated basket, while larger debris stays inside for removal during cleaning.
As a result, it helps keep debris out of a pump or other equipment. However, it does not replace a microscreen drum filter, biological treatment or disinfection where those stages are needed.
Where Basket Strainers Fit
Aquaculture and RAS
For example, catch leaves, feed clumps and other coarse debris before it reaches pumps. Then use the remaining filtration stages to treat finer solids and dissolved waste.
Aquarium life support
Similarly, protect water-circulation equipment in freshwater or marine systems. Confirm that the body, cover, seals and connections suit the water conditions.
Water transfer and process lines
Add accessible coarse screening where debris could obstruct equipment. Therefore, match the strainer to the actual branch flow and the available pressure budget.
Simple access for routine cleaning
How a Basket Strainer Works
Water flows through the basket openings. Meanwhile, debris larger than the openings stays in the basket.
The clear cover helps with visual checks. In addition, optional inlet and outlet manometers help you track pressure loss.
Stop the pump and release pressure before opening. Then lift out the basket, clean it and check the seal.
Built for Practical Pump Protection
Corrosion-resistant PP body
Polypropylene does not rust, making it a dependable choice for long-term use in suitable water conditions. Confirm chemical and temperature compatibility for the complete assembly.
5 mm basket openings
All six listed BSF models use a 5 mm opening. Other openings can be discussed, with flow and pressure loss checked for the chosen basket.
Clear, quick-opening cover
The acrylic cover allows a visual check, while quick access makes basket cleaning easier. First, isolate and depressurise the housing before opening it.
Six BSF catalogue models
Basket Strainer Specifications
First, use the original specification sheet to compare sizes. However, maximum flow is a catalogue limit. Final selection also depends on pressure loss, screen condition and pump suction requirements.

Scroll the table sideways to view all columns. DN is a nominal connection designation, not the pipe’s internal diameter.

Hydraulic and Operating Data
The sheet labels pressure loss at nominal velocity (Vnom), not at maximum flow.
| Model | Basket opening mm | Velocity min / nominal / max m/s | Pressure loss at Vnom mbar | Max. working pressure bar | Temperature range °C | Dry weight kg | Operating weight kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSF-50 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 50 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 40 | 115 |
| BSF-85 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 52.9 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 44 | 120 |
| BSF-115 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 55.9 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 48 | 125 |
| BSF-220 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 50 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 53 | 130 |
| BSF-430 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 50 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 113 | 290 |
| BSF-650 | 5 | 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 | 70.6 | 2.5 | 10–40 | 122 | 325 |
The sheet lists PP material, a mesh/pipe opening ratio of 1 / 4.3, and optional inlet and outlet manometers for all models. Confirm the ratio definition and permitted pressure at temperature with your approved drawing.

Prepare your selection brief
Basket Strainer Flow & Size Calculator
Compare your flow with the catalogue, then send the result for review. Also enter the basket opening so the result clearly identifies a standard 5 mm duty or a custom-screen request.
How the calculator works
Turnover flow is water volume ÷ turnover time. Comparison flow adds your chosen percentage allowance. Pipe velocity uses v = Q ÷ A, with Q in m³/s and A based on the actual internal diameter.
The model comparison uses the six catalogue maximum flows at the listed 5 mm opening. For a different opening, it records a custom-screen request rather than assuming a capacity multiplier. However, pressure loss is not calculated from the single Vnom figures.
Flow, basket opening and pressure-loss data are all needed for final selection. See Eaton’s strainer pressure-loss method for why a model-specific coefficient and basket correction are needed. Eaton’s model coefficients are not used for Pureflow BSF equipment.
Installation and Maintenance
Allow Room to Clean the Basket
- Confirm the inlet and outlet levels, flange standard and flow direction.
- Leave enough clearance above the cover to remove the basket.
- Support the housing and connected pipework as specified in the installation drawing.
- Finally, provide isolation and a way to release pressure before maintenance.
Protect the Pump’s Suction Conditions
A strainer adds resistance, and debris increases that resistance as the basket fills. Therefore, check the available suction head and the pump’s requirements for both clean and dirty conditions.
Inspect the basket and track pressure loss to set a cleaning interval. Also confirm a suitable bypass or parallel arrangement if the process must continue during cleaning.

Basket Strainer FAQs
What does a basket strainer do?
It sits in the pipe before a pump and catches leaves, debris and stray fish in a removable basket. It protects the pump impeller and anything downstream from damage and blockage.
How do I pick the right size?
Match it to your pipe size and flow, so it doesn't restrict water. A larger basket also means less frequent cleaning. Tell us the flow and pipe size and we'll suggest a model.
How often should I clean the basket?
Check it weekly at first and adjust to what you find. Ponds with trees nearby may need cleaning daily in leaf season. A blocked basket starves the pump, which makes it noisy and wears it out.
Do I still need a strainer if I have a drum filter?
In a gravity-fed system the pump sits after the drum filter, so a strainer is extra protection. In a pump-fed system the strainer is the main protection for the pump, so it's strongly recommended.
Can it be used on seawater?
Tell us your water type when you enquire so we confirm the right body and basket materials for it.
