Drum Filter Installation ChecklistLevels, Drains and Power
A checklist for installing a drum filter: inlet and outlet levels, drain slope, power, wash water and commissioning.
EQUIPMENT REFERENCESee the mechanism.
Understand the duty.
Select a route or a stage to inspect the process. The cutaway explains the equipment and water environment; it is a teaching illustration, not a project drawing.
Capture solids
Use actual flow, screen opening and solids duty.
Particles are retained as water crosses the screen. Dissolved contaminants require other treatment stages.
- Use actual flow, screen opening and solids duty.
- Confirm approved levels, wash supply and waste drainage.
- Observe a complete guarded cycle before changing settings.
Key takeaways
- Levels first: Work out the water level at the tank, the inlet to the filter and the outlet.
- The drain: The sludge trough needs a drain with good fall and a pipe sized for the wash flow.
- Clean water outlet: Make sure the outlet pipe can carry the full flow without backing water up into the drum.
- Power and control: A clean, protected supply for the drive, wash pump and controller, with proper earthing.

Levels first
Work out the water level at the tank, the inlet to the filter and the outlet. For gravity feed, the filter inlet must sit below the water level in the tank by enough to give the required head. Mark all three heights on a drawing.

The drain
The sludge trough needs a drain with good fall and a pipe sized for the wash flow. A flat or undersized drain is the most common cause of trough overflow.
Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Flow & turnover planner
Relate a measured water volume to a selected turnover time. Confirm the time from the application and hydraulic design.
Assumptions and limits
A planning allowance is your assumption. This calculation does not choose a filter, prove treatment capacity or account for pump head.
Measured wash-water use
Use measurements across complete wash cycles and the recorded daily cycle count.
Assumptions and limits
Identify whether you measured wash supply or total waste discharge. No default litres per Pureflow wash cycle are assumed.
Convert units before you calculate
Planning arithmetic · inputs remain visible for review · example values are not operating recommendations
Clean water outlet
Make sure the outlet pipe can carry the full flow without backing water up into the drum.
Power and control
A clean, protected supply for the drive, wash pump and controller, with proper earthing. Keep the controller out of splash and heat.
Wash water
Decide where the spray water comes from and that it is clean enough that it will not block the nozzles. Fit a strainer.
Access and lighting
Leave room to lift off the lid, reach the screen and service the drive. Good light makes the daily check easier.
Commissioning
Fill slowly, check for leaks, run a few wash cycles with the sensor set, and watch the first hour. Then write down the settings for next time. See gravity or pump-fed for the feed layout choices.

Drum Filter Installation Checklist FAQ
How much fall does the drain need?
Enough that sludge runs away without standing. Ask for the figure for your model.
Can I install it outdoors?
Yes, with shade and weather protection for the electrics.
