Ozone and ORP ControlDosing Without Guesswork
How ORP (redox) monitoring is used to control ozone in aquaria and aquaculture, and why you should never dose ozone blind.

Generate and meter
Review contact, off-gas and residual-control routes together.
The generator and control system supply the selected process. ORP is not a universal dose measurement.
- Review contact, off-gas and residual-control routes together.
- Use the approved monitoring, ventilation and interlock arrangement.
- Do not treat an ORP reading as a universal ozone dose.
Key takeaways
- What ORP tells you: ORP, or redox potential, in millivolts, rises as oxidising agents such as ozone build up in the water.
- Using it as a controller: A controller reads the ORP probe and turns the ozone generator on and off to hold a set point.
- Where to put the probe: In a place that reads the treated water and not the raw inlet.
- Do not skip the destruct: Even with ORP control, route the treated water through carbon or aeration so no ozone reaches animals.

What orp tells you
ORP, or redox potential, in millivolts, rises as oxidising agents such as ozone build up in the water. It does not measure ozone directly, but it moves in step with it, and it responds fast.

Using it as a controller
A controller reads the ORP probe and turns the ozone generator on and off to hold a set point. Many marine systems hold the water within a modest ORP band and keep the contact chamber output well below levels that harm animals. Set points depend on the species and system, so follow your designer’s advice.
Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Nominal hydraulic residence time
Relate wetted chamber volume to actual flow through that chamber.
Assumptions and limits
Volume ÷ flow is a nominal hydraulic value. It is not UV dose, ozone CT, pathogen inactivation or biological contact effectiveness. Mixing, short-circuiting and validated reactor performance remain separate.
Flow & turnover planner
Relate a measured water volume to a selected turnover time. Confirm the time from the application and hydraulic design.
Assumptions and limits
A planning allowance is your assumption. This calculation does not choose a filter, prove treatment capacity or account for pump head.

Where to put the probe
In a place that reads the treated water and not the raw inlet. Keep it clean and calibrated, because a dirty probe drifts.
Do not skip the destruct
Even with ORP control, route the treated water through carbon or aeration so no ozone reaches animals. Read ozone safety.

Ozone and ORP Control FAQ
Can I run ozone without ORP control?
It is risky. Dosing blind makes overdoses far more likely.
How often should I calibrate the probe?
Often, and follow the probe maker’s guidance.
