UV Sterilisation for HydroponicsProtecting the Nutrient Solution
UV sterilisation for hydroponics: what UV-C kills, dose and sizing, placement after filtration, lamp care and limits of UV in nutrient solution.

Pre-filter
Define the treatment objective and actual reactor flow.
Control particles and confirm UV transmittance before assessing reactor performance.
- Define the treatment objective and actual reactor flow.
- Use UVT and validated reactor performance.
- Follow the enclosed reactor’s isolation, lamp and sleeve procedures.
Key takeaways
- UV-C inactivates many pathogens and algae in flowing water.
- Filter first. Cloudy water blocks UV.
- Size by dose and flow, and replace lamps yearly.
- UV does not remove nutrients or chemical contamination.

What uv-c does
Short-wave UV passes through water in a chamber and disrupts microorganism DNA. Treated organisms cannot multiply.

Dose and sizing
Dose is intensity times contact time. Slower flow or more lamp power gives a higher dose. See UV lamp sizing and dose.
Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Nominal hydraulic residence time
Relate wetted chamber volume to actual flow through that chamber.
Assumptions and limits
Volume ÷ flow is a nominal hydraulic value. It is not UV dose, ozone CT, pathogen inactivation or biological contact effectiveness. Mixing, short-circuiting and validated reactor performance remain separate.
Lamp operating-hour planner
Use the manufacturer’s stated service life and an operating-hours record to plan a review date.
Assumptions and limits
Lamp intensity, fouling, UVT and reactor validation still govern UV performance. A glowing lamp or an hours counter alone does not prove effective treatment.

Placement and care
- Put it after filtrationClean water lets UV through.
- Size for peak flowNot average.
- Clean the sleeveScale reduces dose.
- Replace the lampAbout every 12 months.

Limits
- No effect on dissolved nutrients.
- Cannot clean cloudy water.
- Does not kill pathogens already in roots.

UV Sterilisation for Hydroponics FAQ
Does UV harm nutrients?
It can affect some chelated iron slightly. Test and adjust.
How often to replace the lamp?
About every 12 months.
Can UV replace filtration?
No. Use both.
