Recirculating HydroponicsSave Water and Control Disease
Recirculating hydroponics: how closed-loop nutrient solution works, solution management, filtration, disinfection, EC and pH control and common mistakes.

Supply the roots
Use measured irrigation and peak return duty.
A managed nutrient solution reaches the growing system at a flow suited to its design.
- Use measured irrigation and peak return duty.
- Record nutrient chemistry, temperature and root-zone conditions.
- Coordinate treatment with the growing method and crop programme.
How the loop works
- Mix solution in the reservoirSet EC and pH.
- Pump to the cropThrough channels or drippers.
- Collect the runoffReturn to the reservoir.
- Treat the returnFilter and disinfect.
- Adjust and repeatCorrect EC and pH.

Managing the solution
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Check pH and EC | Daily |
| Top up with water | As needed |
| Replace the solution | Every few weeks or as advised |
| Clean the reservoir | Between crops |
Roots take some nutrients faster than others, so ratios drift. Test and rebalance rather than only adding more.
Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Hydroponic return-flow scenario
Convert a daily irrigation plan and drainage fraction into an average return flow.
Assumptions and limits
Average flow can be far below short irrigation peaks. Measure the peak and account for solids, chemistry and disinfection before selecting equipment.
Pond or tank volume
Estimate a rectangular water volume from internal wetted dimensions and average operating depth.
Assumptions and limits
Irregular shapes, sloping walls, freeboard and displaced equipment change the usable water volume. Confirm with a fill meter where practical.
Convert units before you calculate
Planning arithmetic · inputs remain visible for review · example values are not operating recommendations
Common mistakes
- Never replacing the solution.
- No disinfection.
- Warm reservoirs.
Use the real irrigation return

Recirculating Hydroponics FAQ
How often should I change the solution?
Depends on crop and system. Test EC and nutrients regularly.
Is recirculating safe?
Yes with filtration and disinfection.
Do I need UV?
It greatly reduces disease risk.
