Aquarium Rack FiltrationShared Systems for Many Tanks
Aquarium rack filtration: one central filter for every tank in a shop, how overflows, drains and returns work, drum filter and biofilter sizing, and disease control.
SYSTEM CONCEPTSee the mechanism.
Understand the duty.
Select a route or a stage to inspect the process. The cutaway explains the equipment and water environment; it is a teaching illustration, not a project drawing.
Manage the display
Record the stock, feeding and operating water volume.
Use the actual operating water volume, stock and feeding programme to establish the life-support review.
- Record the stock, feeding and operating water volume.
- Keep mechanical, biological and gas duties distinct.
- Review quarantine, maintenance access and safe water replacement.
Key takeaways
- One drum filter and biofilter serve all tanks.
- Every tank has an overflow, drains by gravity and receives clean return water.
- Central systems cut labour and keep water consistent.
- Disease can spread through shared water, so plan UV and quarantine.

A filter in every tank or one central system?
| Point | Filter per tank | Central drum filter and biofilter |
|---|---|---|
| Removing dirt | Sponge or wool, rinsed by hand | Automatic: the drum filter rinses itself |
| Dirt in the water | Stays until the next clean | Leaves at the next rinse |
| Water volume | One tank | Whole system, a bigger buffer |
| Labour | High | Low |

How a central rack system works
- An overflow in every tankSets the level and carries water out.
- Gravity drain to the filterOne collecting pipe.
- The drum filter removes the dirtFine solids leave the system.
- The biofilter removes the ammoniaMoving bed media.
- Pump and UV-CSends clean water back.
- Back to every tankThrough a manifold with valves.

Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Water-change volume planner
Calculate the volume changed per event and the original-water fraction remaining after repeated equal changes.
Assumptions and limits
Assumes complete mixing between equal changes. Match replacement-water chemistry and temperature; this is not a safe-change prescription or a treatment guarantee.
Flow & turnover planner
Relate a measured water volume to a selected turnover time. Confirm the time from the application and hydraulic design.
Assumptions and limits
A planning allowance is your assumption. This calculation does not choose a filter, prove treatment capacity or account for pump head.

Why a drum filter and a moving bed
A drum filter beats sponges and wool because the waste leaves rather than sitting in the filter. A moving bed biofilter stays clean because tumbling media rub each other. See aquarium drum filter.
Size the filter for your rack
A common starting point is three to five system turnovers an hour. Size the biofilter from the daily feed, not the volume. See biofilter sizing.
Designing the rack
- Use bulkhead overflows with a mesh or sponge on the inlet.
- Slope drain pipes continuously.
- Fit a valve on every tank return.
- Keep a service space around the filter.
Keeping disease from spreading
Shared water can share pathogens. Use UV-C on the return, keep quarantine on a separate system and isolate sick tanks. See quarantine systems.
The weekly routine
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every day | Feed and look at every tank, check flows and the drum filter |
| Every week | Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH, change part of the water |
| Every month | Check pumps, nozzles and UV sleeves |

Aquarium Rack Filtration FAQ
Can I add tanks later?
Yes, if the filter was sized with spare capacity.
What if one tank has disease?
Isolate it and use UV and quarantine.
Is central filtration only for shops?
No. It suits breeders, labs and large home fish rooms too.
