Nutrient Solution EC and pHTargets and How to Manage Them
Hydroponic nutrient solution EC and pH: targets, how to measure and adjust, drift in recirculating systems, water quality and common nutrient problems.
SYSTEM CONCEPTSee the mechanism.

Supply the roots
Use measured irrigation and peak return duty.
A managed nutrient solution reaches the growing system at a flow suited to its design.
- Use measured irrigation and peak return duty.
- Record nutrient chemistry, temperature and root-zone conditions.
- Coordinate treatment with the growing method and crop programme.
What ec and ph mean
| Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| EC | Total dissolved nutrient strength |
| pH | Acidity, controls nutrient uptake |

Typical targets
| Crop type | pH | EC (mS/cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Leafy greens | 5.5 to 6.5 | 0.8 to 1.6 |
| Herbs | 5.5 to 6.5 | 1.0 to 1.6 |
| Fruiting crops | 5.5 to 6.5 | 2.0 to 3.5 |

Work with your own numbers.
Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.
Hydroponic return-flow scenario
Convert a daily irrigation plan and drainage fraction into an average return flow.
Assumptions and limits
Average flow can be far below short irrigation peaks. Measure the peak and account for solids, chemistry and disinfection before selecting equipment.
Pond or tank volume
Estimate a rectangular water volume from internal wetted dimensions and average operating depth.
Assumptions and limits
Irregular shapes, sloping walls, freeboard and displaced equipment change the usable water volume. Confirm with a fill meter where practical.

Measuring and adjusting
- Calibrate metersRegularly.
- Measure at the same time dailyKeep records.
- Adjust pH slowlySmall amounts of pH up or down.
- Adjust ECAdd nutrients or water.

Drift in recirculating systems
Plants take nutrients at different rates, so ratios drift. Top up with a balanced mix and replace the solution on a schedule. See recirculating hydroponics.
Water quality
Know your source water. High alkalinity or salts change pH and EC. Test, and filter or treat if needed.
Use the real irrigation return

Nutrient Solution EC and pH FAQ
What is the best pH?
About 5.8 to 6.2 for many crops.
How often to check?
Daily.
Why does pH rise?
Plants consume nitrate and release alkalinity.
