Understand the duty.

Select a route or a stage to inspect the process. The cutaway explains the equipment and water environment; it is a teaching illustration, not a project drawing.

Pre-filter

Define the treatment objective and actual reactor flow.

How it works

Control particles and confirm UV transmittance before assessing reactor performance.

What to establish
  • Define the treatment objective and actual reactor flow.
  • Use UVT and validated reactor performance.
  • Follow the enclosed reactor’s isolation, lamp and sleeve procedures.

Motion explains direction and mechanism; it does not represent measured performance. Geometry, stage order, pipe routes and equipment configuration are conceptual. Use the approved project design, operating instructions and verified model data.

Key takeaways

  • UV-C inactivates organisms in flowing water.
  • Filter first. Clear water gives a better dose.
  • Size by flow and contact time.
  • UV does not remove dissolved nutrients.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What is a UV system?

A sealed chamber with a UV-C lamp in a quartz sleeve. Water flows past the lamp, and UV light damages the DNA of organisms.

UV-C SYSTEMS

Why use a UV system?

Clear green waterKills floating algae.
Disease controlReduces pathogens in recirculating systems.
HatcheriesProtects eggs and larvae.
PLANNING WORKBENCH

Work with your own numbers.

Use the tools below to explore the relevant arithmetic. Enter measured values or declared assumptions. An estimate does not establish equipment capacity, biological performance or a safe operating limit.

Nominal hydraulic residence time

Relate wetted chamber volume to actual flow through that chamber.

Assumptions and limits

Volume ÷ flow is a nominal hydraulic value. It is not UV dose, ozone CT, pathogen inactivation or biological contact effectiveness. Mixing, short-circuiting and validated reactor performance remain separate.

—Nominal residence · seconds
—Nominal residence · minutes
Enter your values, or load the labelled arithmetic example. No design values are pre-filled.
FormulaNominal residence seconds = chamber litres × 3.6 ÷ flow in m³/h.
Convert units before you calculate
Choose units and enter a value.

UV-C SYSTEMS

How many uv-c units do i need?

Dose depends on lamp power, flow and water clarity. See UV lamp sizing and dose. A clarifier and a sterilizer use different doses: see the difference.

QUESTIONS

UV System for Ponds, Aquariums and Aquaculture FAQ

How long does a UV lamp last?

About a year of use.

Does UV harm fish?

No. Treated water has no UV left.
